Formerly known as the GHG Registry
Founded by the Environmental Defense Fund in 1996, Environmental Resources Trust (ERT)
created the worlds first private greenhouse gas emissions registry in 1997, the GHG
Registry®. ERT and the GHG Registry became part of the non-profit Winrock
International in 2007. Winrocks mission is to empower the disadvantaged, increase
economic opportunity and sustain natural resources around the world. It is a global
leader in such areas as agriculture and forestry ().
The GHG Registry will be officially re-launched in November as the American Carbon
Registry®, the only U.S. registry that can boast time-tested integrity in the areas of
carbon registry operations and carbon technical services. The new American Carbon
Registry website (www.americancarbonregistry.org) will also be launched in November
and will include the American Carbon Registry Operating Standard, a corporate
inventory protocol and various industry and project protocols as well as an upgraded
trading platform.
ERT is recognized industry pioneer, having worked for over a decade in the technical
and policy areas to set the highest standards for carbon offset creation. Since its
launch, ERT and the American Carbon Registry have worked with major US companies in
key emitting sectors as well as companies with corporate social responsibility
objectives, providing technical support to enable accurate emissions tracking using
our on-line serialized registry system. Over 100 million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions from corporate, utility and other private sector organizations have been
registered, including 21 million tons of emission reductions. Our system has provided
the infrastructure for international trades of GHG reductions including one of the
first ever between a US and Canadian company.
The American Carbon Registry® was designed to:
Provide transparency over ownership claims
concerning emission reductions
Support market transactions of verified emission
reductions
Record validated greenhouse gas emissions profiles
Document the environmental integrity of registered
GHG emissions
American Carbon Registry utilizes ERTs rigorous screening process (),
which enables cost-effective registration of high quality GHG inventories and Verified
Emission Reductions, denominated in units of metrics tons and labeled as Emissions
Reduction Tons (ERTs).
American Carbon Registry® members may use ERTs infrastructure to support their
internal emissions management functions or as a public disclosure and public offer
facility.
Buyers of verified project-based carbon offsets may use the American Carbon Registry®
to identify and contact potential sellers and to support and document their purchases.
Sellers of verified project-based carbon offsets may use the American Carbon Registry®
to advertise and promote their projects, document their validity and support the sales
process.
